4bit digital compass

 Image
Here's a nifty project I found off of Hackaday - how to build your own 16 point (4bit) digital compass. Instead of using the popular 3bit Dinsmore compass the author decided to build his own.

The author attached a magnet to a reflective encoding disk. Using four infrared photoreflectors he was able to read the position of the disk and thefore the magnet.

For those that aren't so clever as to create your own electric compass, the popular Devantech compass works.

Here's how to make a RF-Condenser microphone circuit that's similar to a Sennheiser MKH series mic, Uwe writes - "This RF-circuit is operating at 7.68 MHz and 48 V phantom power supplied. It is tested with a large diaphragm cardioid capsule from Ralf Falk, who himself is designing a LF tube microphone and with a small diaphragm capsule from a Sennheiser MKH415... Lots of experiments, gathered experiences and improvements during the development - with quite satisfactory results, to my point of view." - Link.

Washing Microcontroller Timer

Washing machine, after modification (14.832 Bytes)Did you ever face that, your washing m/c already run out the mechanical timer dial? After using for several times, the dial gir may worn out, and than it can not move anyhow.

Many washing m/c shell in the market has mechanical controlled sequence for activated the timer and the sequence back and forth for their motor; washing motor or spinning motor. Spinning motor control only has one direction only, and its simple could be changed to the discrete mechanical timer which sell on the market. But washing motor control has 2 direction for this purpose, it means to squeeze the clothes, it must go to forward and then reversed. Link

Controlling LED Arrays on TCP/IP Networks

The new Color LED matrix controllers from Spark Fun Electronics provide a fun way to control 8 x 8 color (RGB) LED matrices. Connecting directly onto a common cathode RGB 8 x 8 LED array, the controller "back pack" provides a simple serial interface to the LEDs. This eliminates the headaches of switching 192 discrete LEDs on and off.
While this is all nice, we still need some way to control the LED controller; something that will send it the image data. This tutorial focuses on controlling one or more LED matrices over TCP/IP using an embedded ethernet board. The LED array becomes a server on the network and may be updated from any computer on the network running a simple JAVA client program. This is a versatile way to control the matrix and it allows for huge expansion. In this tutorial, one LED matrix is connected to the network. But using the same techniques, many LED matrices may be controlled over the network. And if this network is connected to the internet and properly set up, the LED matrices may be controlled from anywhere in the world! LINK

Tracking ADC

A third variation on the counter-DAC-based converter theme is, in my estimation, the most elegant. Instead of a regular "up" counter driving the DAC, this circuit uses an up/down counter. The counter is continuously clocked, and the up/down control line is driven by the output of the comparator. So, when the analog input signal exceeds the DAC output, the counter goes into the "count up" mode. When the DAC output exceeds the analog input, the counter switches into the "count down" mode. Either way, the DAC output always counts in the proper direction to track the input signal.

Notice how no shift register is needed to buffer the binary count at the end of a cycle. Since the counter's output continuously tracks the input (rather than counting to meet the input and then resetting back to zero), the binary output is legitimately updated with every clock pulse.

An advantage of this converter circuit is speed, since the counter never has to reset. Note the behavior of this circuit:

Note the much faster update time than any of the other "counting" ADC circuits. Also note how at the very beginning of the plot where the counter had to "catch up" with the analog signal, the rate of change for the output was identical to that of the first counting ADC. Also, with no shift register in this circuit, the binary output would actually ramp up rather than jump from zero to an accurate count as it did with the counter and successive approximation ADC circuits.

Perhaps the greatest drawback to this ADC design is the fact that the binary output is never stable: it always switches between counts with every clock pulse, even with a perfectly stable analog input signal. This phenomenon is informally known as bit bobble, and it can be problematic in some digital systems.

This tendency can be overcome, though, through the creative use of a shift register. For example, the counter's output may be latched through a parallel-in/parallel-out shift register only when the output changes by two or more steps. Building a circuit to detect two or more successive counts in the same direction takes a little ingenuity, but is worth the effort.

Inverter Circuits

12 Volt Automotive Inverter : This circuit will allow you to operate small devices like laptop computers inside your automobile without an expensive automobile power supply. The circuit takes advantage of the fact that power transformers are linear devices and can be used to step up as well as step down.

12 Volt DC to 120 Volt AC Inverter: this inverter should solve that problem. It takes12 VDC and steps it up to120 VAC. The-Wattage depends on which transistors you use for Q1 and Q2, as well as how "big" a transformer you use for T1. The inverter can be constructed to supply anywhere from1 to1000 (1 KW)-Watts.

Car anti theft wireless alarm

This FM radio-controlled anti- theft alarm can be used with any vehicle having 6- to 12-volt DC supply system. The mini VHF, FM transmitter is fitted in the vehicle at night when it is parked in the car porch or car park. The receiver unit with CXA1019, a single IC-based FM radio module, which is freely available in the market at reasonable rate, is kept inside. Receiver is tuned to the transmitter's frequency. When the transmitter is on and the signals are being received by FM radio receiver, no hissing noise is available at the output of receiver. Thus transistor T2 (BC548) does not conduct. This results in the relay driver transistor T3 getting its forward base bias via 10k resistor R5 and the relay gets energised. When an intruder tries to drive the car and takes it a few metres away from the car porch, the radio link between the car (transmitter) and alarm (receiver) is broken. As a result FM radio module gene-rates hissing noise. Hissing AC signals are coupled to relay switching circ- uit via audio transformer. These AC signals are rectified and filtered by diode D1 and capacitor C8, and the resulting positive DC voltage provides a forward bias to transistor T2. Thus transistor T2 conducts, and it pulls the base of relay driver transistor T3 to ground level. The relay thus gets de-activated and the alarm connected via N/C contacts of relay is switched on. If, by chance, the intruder finds out about the wireless alarm and disconnects the transmitter from battery, still remote alarm remains activated because in the absence of signal, the receiver continues to produce hissing noise at its output. So the burglar alarm is fool-proof and highly reliable.

AT90LS8515 PBX / VIRTUAL PBX

in this project, we demonstrate the 4 line telephone PBX systems with full signaling and switching functions similar to those of the central office systems PBX. It's Not Virtual PBX .Dial tone, busy tone, and ring tone are provided during call progress. Ringing is generated at the receiving end of the phone being called. Switching employs integrated circuit (IC) matrix switches on four buses. Thus, this PBX system is expandable to 8 lines (4 pairs) if more hardware is added. This PBX system is switching on the Dual Tone Multi Frequency (DTMF) dialing signal and does not work with pulse dialing signal founded in some older phones.in Virtual PBX, we use IP telephone System. RS-232C multiplexer serves as multiport adapter

Multiport RS-232C PC add-on boards are intended for intensive multichannel communication. Therefore, each serial port has its own transmission controller. If your application doesn't need interrupt-driven service, and polling the devices through RS-232C channels one after another is sufficient, then you can use a single controller with switched input and output signals instead of installing a costly multiport adapter.
The ISA bus directly controls the eight-channel multiplexer in Figure 1. The GAL20V8 integrates the address decoder and other glue logic. The latched address and gating signals drive the DG509A analog multiplexers that actually switch the TXD and RXD lines. The circuit automatically selects channel 0 upon system reset (you can download PLD equations from EDN's ftp site). The analog multiplexers feature both overvoltage protection and break-before-make switching so that the circuit operates safely over the ±12V range.

You can easily scale the number of available channels from four to sixteen by using four multiplexers and two decoders with opposite SEL settings. One PLD can accommodate four multiplexers if you decode additional E2 and E3 enable signals from Q2 and Q3. You can also connect the multiplexers in parallel to switch other signals. (DI #1832)

New Ultrasonic Sensor for Hobbiests

Look out Devantech, there's a new kid on the proverbial block, the robotics-block, that is. While the ultrasonic sensor line from Devantech has turned into a staple for many hobby robots, it looks like there might be another viable contender. Check out the Ultrasonic Range Finder from Maxbotix, which is listed for $24. A FAQ and datasheet on the sensor are available on Maxbotix's website. The specs on the device say it can range from 0 to 6.45 meters (0 - 256 inches), and outputs in either serial, analog, or PWM signals.

PS. Maxbotix or Devantech, if you're listening, how about sending some of your stuff our way for reviews?
